There’s a feeling that comes up sometimes. Am I behind? It doesn’t come from panic the way it used to. It’s softer than that. More like a realization that appears out of nowhere and lingers just long enough to be felt. I don’t actually believe I missed my time. I don’t believe that what’s meant for me has passed me by. And still…there are moments where something in me wonders.
Holding Two Truths
I think this is the part no one really talks about. You can feel hopeful and still feel a little sad. You can trust your path and still question it sometimes. You can believe everything will come together and still feel the weight of where you are right now. All of that can exist at the same time.
Where It Shows Up
For me, it shows up in small moments. Looking around at people I’ve known for years. Seeing the lives they’ve built. The families. The milestones. The timelines that seem to have… continued. While mine feel paused. Changed direction in ways I didn’t plan. And I feel it. Not jealousy. Not comparison in the way people assume. Something quieter. A kind of ache. For what I hope to have one day.
The Part That’s Hard to Admit
There’s also a mental and emotional weight to this. Because when your life doesn’t follow the expected timeline…your mind tries to make sense of it.
Did I do something wrong?
Did I prioritize the wrong things?
Am I behind?
Even when you know, logically, that life doesn’t actually work that way. Even when you know everything you’ve been through has shaped you into who you are now. The thoughts still come.
What I’m Starting to Understand
What I’m starting to understand is this: The feeling isn’t a sign that something is wrong. It’s a sign that I care. That I’m aware. That I’m present enough in my life to feel the difference between where I am and what I hope for. And that doesn’t mean I’ve missed anything. It just means I’m human.
The Truth Beneath It
If I’m honest…I don’t feel like I missed my time. I feel like my timeline changed. And sometimes, I’m still catching up to that. Emotionally. Mentally. Even physically. Because when your life pauses for something as big as cancer…it doesn’t just pick back up where it left off. You come back different. And building from that place takes time. More time than people realize.
Holding the In-Between
So now, when that feeling comes up…I don’t try to push it away. I let it be there. Without turning it into something bigger than it is. Because I can feel both things: Hope for what’s ahead and sadness for what hasn’t happened yet. Without making either one wrong.
A Quiet Reframe
Maybe I didn’t miss my time. Maybe I just arrived here differently. And maybe the things I want…are still coming. Just not on the timeline I expected. And for now…that’s enough to hold.
